Shrinkflation in Indian Packaged Foods

Documented pack-size reductions, 2018–2026, compiled from published reports, distributor audits, and corporate statements.

ℹ

Scope and Honest Limits

No official or industry body publishes a complete list of pack-weight changes for every packaged product sold in India. There are hundreds of thousands of SKUs and companies are not required to disclose reductions. This comprehensive index covers 100 of the highest-selling packaged food, beverage, cooking staple, and household goods in India based on verified distributor checks, retail price audits, corporate analyst calls, and public investigative reports.

Confidence ratings (High, Medium, Low) indicate verification levels. Figures originate in news reports, market audits, and company calls.

Executive Summary

Core Takeaways from Public Records

01

The ₹5, ₹10 and ₹20 'Magic' Price Points are Protected

Dabur's CEO calls ₹1, ₹5, and ₹10 'sacred' price points and HUL calls them 'magic' numbers. Indian consumers resist price hikes at low denominations, so manufacturers systematically reduce weight instead of increasing price. Small pack sales share: HUL ~30%, Britannia 50–55%, Parle ~70%.

02

Maggi July 2026 Cuts: 7% to 9% Less Noodles Across the Range

Nestlé India revised weights across almost its entire Maggi portfolio in July 2026 while retaining MRPs. The ₹7 pack dropped from 35g to 32g (-8.6%), the ₹10 pack from 52g to 48g (-7.7%), and larger family packs by ~6.7%, equivalent to an immediate 7–9.4% effective price hike per gram.

03

Parle-G's ₹5 Pack Has Halved Over the Long Run

In 1994, Parle-G sold a 100g pack at ₹4 (₹0.04/g). Over three decades, the pack size reduced progressively to 80g, 76g in 2018, 55g in 2021 at ₹5, and now 45–50g in the mid-2020s. Consumers receive ~50% less product for their ₹5 coin—effectively doubling the cost per gram.

04

The 1-Litre vs 900ml Edible Oil Shrinkflation

During cooking oil price spikes, major edible oil brands (Fortune, Saffola, Dhara, Gemini) transitioned standard retail pouches from 1 full Litre (1000ml / ~910g) down to 900ml pouches at virtually unchanged or higher sticker prices, permanently shrinking household kitchen supplies by 10%.

05

2026 Cost Pressures: Crude, Palm Oil & Polymers

A new wave of shrinkflation in 2026 is driven by crude-linked input costs (palm oil, packaging polymers) exacerbated by West Asia supply chain disruptions. Dabur, Britannia, Godrej, and Marico have implemented dual strategies: grammage cuts on ₹10/₹20 packs and direct price increases on larger SKUs.

06

The GST 2.0 Episode: Weight Increases vs Odd-Pricing Disputes

When GST on biscuits, soaps, and noodles was cut from 18% to 5% on 22 September 2025, FMCG firms briefly had awkward price points (e.g., ₹4.45 Parle-G, 88p candy). CBIC clarified that firms could increase pack weights by 6–12% to preserve familiar price points, though legal challenges contested whether benefits must be passed as direct cash cuts.

What FMCG Companies Have Said & Done

Disclosures from earnings calls, analyst presentations, and corporate spokespeople on managing inflation.

Britannia Industries

Brands: Good Day, Marie Gold, Bourbon, NutriChoice

2022, 2026

Passed on approximately 65% of its incremental input-cost rise in 2021–22 by reducing weights at existing price points. In 2026, indicated calibrated price increases on packs above ₹10 combined with grammage cuts on entry packs to counter palm oil and packaging inflation. Shifted export manufacturing back to Mundra from Oman to bypass West Asia disruptions.

“Managing pricing actions through calibrated grammage cuts and selective hikes above ₹10.”
Cited in Sources:

Dabur India

Brands: Chyawanprash, Dabur Red, Real Juice, Vatika

2022, 2026

Downsized grammage on entry products to preserve 'sacred' ₹1, ₹5, and ₹10 price points. In 2026, CEO Mohit Malhotra noted that with inflation touching 10% in key segments, prices would rise on larger SKUs while ₹10 and ₹20 packs undergo grammage cuts. Head of Corporate Communications noted down-switching is actively used in rural areas.

“Price points like ₹1, ₹5 and ₹10 are sacred. In cities companies raise prices; in rural belts pack sizes are trimmed.”
Cited in Sources:

Parle Products

Brands: Parle-G, Monaco, Krackjack, Hide & Seek

2022, 2026

Raised effective prices 7–8% over 12–14 months through a mixture of direct hikes and weight cuts (2022). In 2026, Parle further pruned weights on select low-unit packs to cope with wheat, sugar, and packaging increases while strictly maintaining the ₹5 barrier.

“Parle-G is so price-sensitive that even a 50-paise change shifts consumers; grammage is the only variable.”
Cited in Sources:

Hindustan Unilever (HUL)

Brands: Vim, Lifebuoy, Clinic Plus, Surf Excel, Lux

2022, 2026

Trims pack sizes on 'magic' entry price points (such as cutting Vim bar from 155g to 135g). In 2022, introduced a new Lifebuoy soap size slotted between ₹10 and ₹35, allowing weight adjustments. In 2026, implemented 2–5% price hikes across parts of its portfolio amid 8–10% cost inflation linked to crude and packaging.

“Pricing is the last resort; managing margin lines through portfolio sizing protects volume share.”
Cited in Sources:

PepsiCo India

Brands: Lay's, Kurkure, Doritos

2022

Reduced pouch grammage on ₹5 and ₹10 Lay's and Kurkure packs citing sharp increases in palm oil and multi-layer plastic packaging costs. Tapered Gatorade bottles from 32oz to 28oz globally at unchanged prices.

Cited in Sources:

Godrej Consumer Products

Brands: Godrej No. 1, Cinthol, Good Knight

2026

CEO Sudhir Sitapati noted the soap category was severely impacted by palm oil and geopolitical tensions. GCPL raised soap prices by 5%, detergents by 6–7%, and household insecticides by 4–5% in April 2026, while adjusting promotional grammage on bundled bars.

“Rising palm oil and geopolitical disruptions forced price and size adjustments across soap and home care.”
Cited in Sources:

Emami & Varun Beverages

Brands: BoroPlus, Navratna, Pepsi / Sting bottling

2026

Adjusted quantities in BoroPlus and Navratna herbal cooling oil sachets; launched hyper-affordable mini ₹10 beverage packs to recruit entry consumers while defending operating margins.

Why Small Packs Drive Indian Retail

Because so much volume sits in a few fixed price points, shrinking the pack is the primary lever to raise the effective price.

In India's 1.2+ crore kirana ecosystem, low-unit packs (LUPs) priced at ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20 are consumer anchors. For daily wage earners, rural households, and students, these denominations represent strict, non-negotiable budget boundaries rather than casual change.

A price increase from ₹5 to ₹6 creates transaction friction (coin shortage, psychology shock) and immediately causes volumes to plummet. Consequently, manufacturers treat the price tag as fixed and treat the grammage as fluid.

Share of Sales from Small Price-Point Packs (Sep 2025) [13]

Shampoo79%

Sachets (₹1, ₹2, ₹3) dominate Indian hair care consumption, especially in non-metro and rural belts.

Biscuits64%

Over 64% of biscuits sold in India are priced at ₹5 or ₹10. Price hikes here directly drop consumer volumes.

Chocolates & Confectionery58%

₹5 and ₹10 bars and ₹1 candies form the bedrock of confectionery retail distribution.

Salty Snacks / Namkeen44%

₹5 and ₹10 packets of chips, bhujia, and extruded snacks drive impulsive roadside and kirana purchases.

Toothpaste29%

Small ₹10 and ₹20 travel and trial tubes account for nearly a third of total oral care volumes.

Macroeconomic Context

Food Inflation vs Headline CPI

India’s consumer food price inflation was reported at 5.32% in June 2026, while headline CPI was 4.38% [16].

Official CPI indexes treat smaller pack weights as price rises in theory. In practice, pack-weight adjustments occur across thousands of SKUs and are notoriously hard to detect in monthly headline basket samplings.

⚖️ Policy & Anti-Profiteering

The GST 2.0 Episode (September 2025 Onward)

How a major tax rationalisation triggered an unprecedented clash between convenient coin prices and legal mandates.

On 22 September 2025, the GST rate on biscuits, soaps, shampoos, and noodles was slashed from 18% down to 5% [14].

While intended to grant immediate price relief, it presented FMCG makers with a logistical headache: an exact price reduction created bizarre non-standard coin amounts. For a brief period:

  • Parle-G ₹5 pack was repriced to ₹4.45
  • ₹1 candy was reduced to 88 paise
  • ₹2 shampoo sachet became ₹1.77
  • ₹10 Oreo dropped to ₹8.90
  • Bournvita dropped to ₹26.69 [13]

Retailers were unable to dispense 55-paise change, causing widespread arguments at kirana counters.

The Legal Dilemma: Weight Increase vs Price Cut

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) clarified that FMCG manufacturers could increase pack weights or volumes by 6% to 12% (11–12% for biscuits) to pass on the GST benefit while preserving round numbers like ₹5 and ₹10 [15, 17].

Delhi High Court Contention

A note by law firm JSA Advocates highlighted a Delhi High Court order ruling that anti-profiteering provisions require benefits to be passed on as direct price reductions rather than forced quantity additions [18].

Status check: Judicial interpretation remains active. Subsequent cost shocks in 2026 quickly reversed temporary grammage bonuses back into weight reductions.

Consumer Rights

How to Check Any Product Yourself

Protect your monthly grocery budget with three simple steps and statutory consumer rights.

1

Check Net Quantity & MRP

Always inspect the fine print on the back or side panel. Do not rely on packet dimensions—foil pouches frequently retain identical outer packaging while containing less product.

2

Compute Price per 100g

Use the formula: (MRP ÷ Net Weight) × 100. This standardises all pack variations and allows direct comparison between different brands and package formats.

3

Check Unit Sale Price Rule

Since 1 April 2022, under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, manufacturers must declare unit sale price (₹/g or ₹/ml) on pre-packed goods [19].

Suspect short quantity or deceptive packaging?

Complaints regarding misleading grammage, incorrect unit pricing, or weight tampering can be lodged with the Government of India.
